Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, to serve a six-month sentence for a ₹5 crore loan default. The Delhi High Court rejected his final plea for an extension, citing repeated breaches of payment undertakings. The actor must now complete his prison term after years of litigation.

Rajpal Yadav is back in the headlines, but not for a movie role. The veteran comedian walked into Delhi’s Tihar Jail yesterday afternoon. He surrendered to authorities to start a six-month prison sentence. This move follows a long-standing legal battle over a loan default.

The case involves a 2010 dispute with M/s Murli Projects. Yadav borrowed roughly ₹5 crore to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The debt grew significantly over the years due to interest. A trial court first convicted him in 2018 under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The Delhi High Court showed no leniency during the final hearing. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma noted that Yadav failed to honor nearly 20 different legal undertakings. The court refused to grant more time just because of his celebrity status. “The law applies to everyone equally,” the judge remarked before ordering his immediate surrender.

Yadav tried to offer ₹25 lakh in court to avoid jail. He promised a new repayment schedule. The court rejected this last-minute deal. It stated that he must comply with the surrender order before filing any new applications. This decision sends a clear message about judicial discipline.

The actor’s legal team hopes for a quick resolution after this initial compliance. For now, the Bollywood star remains in custody. The court will review the compliance report on February 7, 2026. This case serves as a major update on financial accountability in the film industry.
