Karachi: The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department has officially extended winter school timings across the province, keeping the start of classes at 9:00 am until February 4, in view of the persistent cold weather conditions.

The revised timings will also be applicable to all public and non-public schools that run under the provincial education system according to an official notification issued by the department. The previous ruling which was to run out on January 26 has been renewed now, to guarantee the health, comfort, and safety of students especially young children.

Decision Taken in Students’ Best Interest

According to education officials, the extension was arrived at following a review of the prevailing weather conditions and feedbacks of school administrations and parents. The temperature in the morning in some areas of Sindh has been unusually low and early school time has been difficult to students.

An education department senior official told the press that the move is the government concern on student welfare that does not interfere with academic continuity. The official added that the updated times are a compromise between protection of the students and regular education.

Stakeholders Welcome the Move

Education stakeholders such as school management bodies, teachers, and parents have greatly welcomed the decision. It is commonly thought that later entry to school in winter months will minimize health risks like seasonal illnesses and guarantee improved school attendance and classroom participation.

Associations of private schools too liked the clarity and uniformity of the directive since it assists institutions to plan effectively without confusion.

Review of Academic Calendars Underway

The Sindh education department has also indicated that it is re-examining the future academic timetable and time of year vacation plans, with consideration to the shifting weather pattern and its effect on the student schedule.

According to education specialists, adaptive policies such as flexible school times could be more prevalent in the future because weather patterns keep on changing.

In the meantime, schools in Sindh will still run with 9am start times until February 4 and the department shall provide further guidelines, where necessary.
